[Major Project] 36: Pre-Vis 01; Real-World Heights & Classroom Modelling 01

PART 01: Figuring out the heights

Initially I had wanted Iron's maximum height to be 2 metres, but after figuring out the students heights - as inspired by the average heights of English children aged 11-13 - he looked weak & small in comparison; because of this I have made Iron 3.1 metres tall - a ridiculous height for a human (the tallest living man is "only" 2.51m tall), but a believable one for a golem-esque strong & powerful character like Iron.

PART 02: Re-designing the classroom floor plan

Having figured out my characters widths and heights, I had to re-design the classroom's floor plan to accommodate them. The floor plan does not include seats nor chemistry equipment. I have included character circles to show their maximum widths in the context of their surroundings.

PART 03: The classroom 3D model

After figuring out the real-world heights of my characters & the heights of the classroom's furniture, I have modelled the basic real-world scale classroom interior for my pre-vis. Once I have created Hydrogen's mouth shapes today, I will be bringing in my complete Hydrogen, Oxygen & Iron character rigs. Because Water is only in the animation's final scene, it allows me to plot out a large chunk of my animation while I skin & rig her. This 3D model will be developed further in a separate file.

[Narrative] 46: “Bon Appétit” Revised Pre-Vis – Clip and Events Desc.

More Pre-Vis? This Late?!
After Sukhi's advice and previous comments from Alan, I have changed much of the events of our story. I returned to the pre-vis to better help us visualise the events and camera setup when animating.

When animating for the revised pre-vis I began by performing more detailed movements with the default characters, however I took advice from a classmate concerning this being unnecessary considering the exact motions would be repeated in the final animation; this resulted in me simply performing basic movements of the objects and characters themselves to illustrate what would be happening - this can be seen in the form of floating objects.

The camera positioning seen in this clip is not representative of what will be used in the animation itself. I had tested out other camera angles with our previous pre-vis but I am unable to upload them tonight due to software differences.

Further Events
To save wasting time I have decided to detail the rest of the main events with bullet points, these are:
  • As the guy shakes multiple spices into the pan, each time he puts one back down it slowly dislodges an apple holding the shelf up; the apple being sat in a fruit bowl beneath the shelf. Many of the spices he forgets to put the lid back on.
  • As the incline grows everything on the shelf slowly begins sliding towards the spice rack.
  • Eventually the apple is completely dislodged from beneath the shelf, causing the shelf to fall and knock the spice rack over.
  • Knocking various open and unopened spices into the pan.
  • While panicking the guy tries to remedy the situation, pulling stuff out of the pan.
  • In the confusion he hits his head on the heat extractor, this leaves him dazed, causes the already loose pans to fall down and causes a wonky overhead cupboard to open further.
  • He tastes the food, hates it.
  • While dazed and hoping to cover up the bad taste so his date enjoys it, just missing pans on the floor, he moves over to the fridge but hits his head on the open cupboard.
  • Even more dazed he slips on a pan, as he falls he hangs onto the fridge handle, swinging with the open door before falling on his behind - meanwhile a couple of objects fall out of the open fridge and hit his head.
  • CUT TO CREDITS
  • Post-Credits: We see him nervously present a plate of the disgusting food to his date (possibly while rubbing his head with his other hand) hoping by some luck she likes it, after taking a hesitant bite, she loves it and begins to scoff it.
  • END

[Narrative] 02 - Screw Loose Productions: Name+Logo Development - My Ideas

When we (Group 5) first began coming up with ideas for our group name, we each put forward multiple ideas and voted on our favourite. My suggestions were Story Forge Studios, Visionary Films and AniGem - eventually we decided on one of Adam's ideas, Screw Loose Productions.

We produced multiple drawings as ideas for what this logo could look like, of which my additions can be seen below...

Screw Loose Productions - logo thumbnails
Thumbnail 7 received the most positive feedback and is my preferred example.

Possible Logo Pre-Vis
Things to note when viewing this video:
In order to save time, at this point the screw seen in this pre-vis lacks a thread as well as the head indentation. The font seen in the footage is a placeholder only, nor are the colours seen representative of those that may be seen if this were developed. As the screw falls it is supposed to remain in the centre of the frame.

Based on thumbnail #7, this logo would be shown at the beginning of our films, much like that of Bad Robot and Pixar's jumping lamp. While this received positive feedback from one of our team members, Adam, this does not necessarily represent our final design choice, of which one is yet to be made. Adam has also suggested instead running this in reverse, an idea I quite like.

There has been further logo progress by other team members, which will be uploaded on the appropriate blogs...
