{Adaption B} 35: Hydrogen Emotions & Pose Sketches

Hydrogen Emotions

Star Temperature - Colour Gradient

Hydrogen Pose Sketches
01: Hydrogen sleeping beneath a tree.

02: Hydrogen struck by lightning, and entering furious state.
Underlying facts - Hydrogen is highly reactive ("angry") at high temperature, and not very reactive ("tired") at low temperature. Lightning is high temperature (30,000°C).

03: Hydrogen struck by lightning and exploding to reveal its water-based form within.
Underlying facts - Hydrogen and Oxygen violently combine to form water (H2O) via a catalyser e.g. a spark, or in this case lightning.

04: Hydrogen "farting" rocket fuel flames on TNT to ignite it.
Underlying facts - Large amounts of Hydrogen are used as rocket fuel.

05: First attempt at a 3/4 view with Hydrogen looking annoyed.

06, 07: Hydrogen flying via rocket fuel flames. More Info

{Adaption B} 07: Carbon as a 'Big Brother' Housemate

[source]

If Carbon were a person
Possible split personality, because of Carbon's different allotropes (physical forms).

Diamond is often related to class and wealth due to its cost and appearance, so a character based off of diamond could be a wealthy and attractive individual.

Diamond is an excellent abrasive due to its hardness, this could translate as an abrasive personality
showing little concern for the feelings of others; harsh” - Google ‘define: abrasive’.

This treatment of Carbon as a harsh character (‘the rude one’) is further backed up by Diamond’s high thermal conductivity, leading to it being icy cold to the touch.

Carbon could not only be a harsh, but also cold
lacking affection or warmth of feeling; unemotional” – Google ‘define: cold’

Diamond’s strength allows it to have great sharpness,
Crafty or deceitful. Fierce or impetuous; violent. Vigilant; alert.” [source]

Carbon could be dirty in the form of charcoal or studious / artistic in the form of graphite.

Carbon as a character could also fall into the category of ‘the promiscuous one’ as a Big Brother housemate due to diamond’s beauty but also carbon’s dirtiness as coal.

Carbon could even be ‘the playa’ as a kind of femme fatale.

Physical appearance
Female, ‘diamonds are a girl’s best friend’ and the societal femininity of diamond.
Thin (less body fat = equals less warmth = cold).
Blue tinged pale skin.
Attractive, referring to the beauty of cut diamonds.
Wide, alert eyes.
Wearing several layers of upper class clothing, for warmth.
Sour expression, to help show harsh personality.
Overarching colour scheme, blues, whites and blacks in reference to Carbon’s allotropes.
A smoker; Carbon as coal, soot and ash.
Her clothes could also be soot stained (this I’m less keen on).

Femme fatale [source]

Carbon Research [source]
About 20% of the weight of living organisms is carbon.

Graphene is the thinnest, strongest material ever known.

Carbon is made within stars when they burn helium. Carbon is part of the ‘ash’ formed by helium burning. Coal = amorphous carbon. Diamond = crystalline carbon.

Diamond is an excellent abrasive because it is the hardest common material and has the highest thermal conductivity.

Carbon can exist with several different 3 dimensional structures in which its atoms are arranged differently (allotropes).

Graphite is one of the softest substances.

DNA’s double helix is made by carbon’s ability to form long molecular chains. Carbon nanotubes have outstanding tensile strength – two orders of magnitude higher than graphite fibres, Kevlar or steel.

Carbon is used as a fuel (coal)

Diamonds are used in jewellery and because they are so hard in industry for cutting drilling, grinding and polishing.

Natural diamonds are found in kimberlite from ancient volcanoes.

{Adaption B} 06: Thoughts About & Rejection of Helium as a BB Housemate

[source]

Helium Properties
A noble gas.
Unreactive.
Colourless.
Odourless.
Available in pressurised tanks.
Used in balloons - connection to parties.
It is an inert gas, so it does not burn
It is also used in air balloons.
Helium glows a bright purple when electrically excited.
[source 01] [source 02] [source 03]

Helium as a Character: pre- Big Brother archetype connection
Light weight and bony with a dopey appearance and clothing indicating nobility, the clothing colours would pull from the glow colour if helium itself. Unfortunately this concept does not pay attention to the Big Brother archetypes connection, so can be considered unsuitable.
The characters may use exaggeration as part of their design, possibly of a caricature-esque appearance.

Helium with Big Brother archetype connection
As a Big Brother housemate Helium could be thought of as the lazy or quiet one due to its lack of reactivity. However the gas also relates to both air and party balloons, this opens up the opportunity of treating Helium as the house's typical "party animal"; this would directly go against the idea of helium being the quiet, lazy one.

A possible overall character design aesthetic
The characters may use exaggeration as part of their design, possibly of a caricature-esque appearance.

Rejection
With all this in mind, since Helium is actually not that interesting as an element, it may not translate as an interesting character design.

{Adaption B} 05: Thoughts on the Elements and their 'Big Brother' Archetypes

Mercury
This would be the controversial one, it is both very useful but also deadly.

Uranium
This is without a doubt the spiteful one due to its radioactivity and use in nuclear weapons.

For example Katie Hopkins could be described as being Uranium in that her opinions can poison other people, her attitude is the fuel, her mouth is her nuclear missile, and the results are her nuclear fallout.

Oxygen
The nice one would likely be Oxygen, it's nice in that breathing it enables us to live, and of course drinking it when combined with Hydrogen, as water is also vital to life.

Helium
The lazy, quiet one is definitely Helium because it is the least reactive element and is just about useless.

Helium gives me an amusing image of a lazy, heavy, balding character with an unkempt beard sat sleeping on a chair, with a bunch of helium balloons tied to their arms and legs in an attempt to lift him up. Now if such a character was a loud snorer this would connect to the high pitched voice effect of helium too.

Radium / Polonium
The radioactive elements Radium or Polonium would be the tragic one due to them being discovered by Marie Curie which among the other radioactive elements she worked with, led to her death. [source]

Potassium
The loud one would be Potassium or one of the Alkali metals. This is because Potassium nitrate makes up 75% of of gunpowder's composition [source]. Potassium also reacts violently in contact with water. [source]

Sulfur
Sulfur would be the weird or gross one due to its sickly yellow colour and horrible rotten-egg like smell. [source]

{Adaption B} 04: Periodic Elements as "Big Brother" Contestants

Royalty free sources: [1] [2]

What happened to the books?
I have decided to move away from book adaptations and move onto something I find much more inspiring; adapting some of the periodic elements into characters. A decision based on my strong interest in science, my love of 3D modelling and my enjoyment of character design.

What's the logic?
After further advice from Alan, I have decided that the underlying logic of these characters is that they are being made for a 3D animated film in which the characters are housemates within the Big Brother house.

Why Big Brother?
I have thought about alternative ideas such as a sit-com, or 'whodunnit' backing. However, having been a viewer of the UK version of Big Brother for several years, I have the understanding of the show's logic and recurring archetypes which I can pull on to produce an interesting final piece.

Big Brother archetypes
Off the top of my head, some of the recurring BB archetypes are...

The loud one
Can be either irritating or appealing to the viewer, depending on entertainment value.

Charlotte Crosby - Celeb BB 2013

The dramatic one
"Oh god a fly, RUN!!!", "You ate my toast!" *cries for two hours* (examples)

Nikki Grahame - BB 2006

The controversial one
Can sometimes survive until final, or at least longer than the public may expect. Depending on the reason for controversy can make for interesting viewing, but often hated or has a mixed public reaction.

Alexandra De-Gale - BB 2008

The "spiteful" one
The one you love to hate, kept in because they stir up the house. Male or female.

Katie Hopkins - Celeb BB 2015

The 'playa'
The one that the public hates, but keeps in to see what happens.

The promiscuous one
Very flirtatious and sexually obsessed, depending on personality and reaction to alcohol has been known to have sex on national TV. Mixed reactions from the public.

The naughty one
Not necessarily sexual, can simply be childish and/or scatty.

The nice one
Has often been known to be winning material, if entertaining.

The quiet one
Often a nice person but public can find boring, so often voted out.

The game player
Hated on by housemates, mixed reaction by public - BB is a game.

The weird one
If gross weird, either doesn't last long or proves entertaining. If funny weird, may last long - mixed reaction by public.

The dark horse
Often disliked / considered dull in the beginning but reaches final, or wins.

The rude one
Reaction hugely dependant on the level and type of rudeness - Celebrity Big Brother 2015 is a perfect example.

The lazy one
Often nominated but if their personality is interesting to public, they survive.

The tragic one
Sad backstory; can be loved or hated by public if they use it to their advantage.

The cook
Other housemates seem to briefly lose their minds without this housemate.

The camp one
Often liked by public if a nice person, can be very entertaining.

^The above archetypes are not limited to a single housemate each, often a housemate displays a multiplicity of these characteristics as well as others I haven't mentioned.

@Alan -- {Adaption B} 03: Book Interests

[source]

My main interest is The Difference Engine, I feel imagining what the alternate history described might look like is very appealing. It lends itself nicely to a unique design aesthetic.

I would also consider adapting some of the Winnie-the-Pooh characters into something more adult oriented, such as transforming them into (possibly) darker versions of themselves, more visually representative of the mental disorders they have been suggested to represent.

I am also interested in Fantastic Voyage II, however I worry that by doing such an adaption it may be difficult to avoid it becoming generic due 'inside the body' having already been, and continuing to be done e.g. the movie Fantastic Voyage, Once Upon A Time... Life,  and Osmosis Jones being some examples.

The rest also interest me because of their content, however I have not yet thought about specific intentions for them...

{Adaption B} 01: Ideas; From Poetry - "Road Rage"

[source]

For Part B of our Adaption project I have decided that my piece of work will be adapted from poetry. After looking at several examples I have narrowed it down to my current favourite, a relatable and comedic poem called Road Rage by anitapoems.com

He hasn't seen a traffic jam,
like this in many years.
He should have stayed home,
with his dog and few cold beers.

His car hasn't moved in minutes,
he's on the verge of showing rage.
Nothing will stop him now,
not even an old hard lonely cage.

The noise began suddenly,
when he let his car horn fly.
Expressing his displeasure,
he wasn't very shy.

Then he began to argue,
with any soul that dared.
He turned flush red with anger,
as his big old nostrils flared.

He jumped out of his car,
and began to wave his cane.
Grandpa forget he was 91,
and all his old age pain.

Finally someone calmed him,
and asked for seven sixty-five.
Grandpa paid for his burger and fries,
and slowly began to drive.

I would turn this into an animated short (without actual poetry) mainly shot from within the car, which makes use of camera angles to avoid revealing the man's true identity and where he actually is until the final moments e.g. via close-ups of parts of his face and body.

I could enforce the annoying traffic jam aesthetic further via rainfall, blurring the scenery in front of him and allowing for a matte painting or low poly models to replace the other cars.

I could also avoid having to fully model the fast food employee if necessary, via only their hand and arm being seen. The ending could be shown in a long shot, revealing the drive thru and other aesthetics such as a zimmer frame strapped to the car roof.
