In short the answer yes I wouldn't recommend Aesop's fables mainly beacuse of how short they are and how non-descrptive they are in relation to character design (no more than a couple of scentences and a moral)? There is another possibility for character design which is less narrative based such as basing characters on the periodic table for example - The qualities of each element turned into a character, possible for an animation or game (similar to your character project). Or taking the underground map and saying 'what would the central line be if it were a character?'. A system of rules we all recognise and then transport in the world of characters.
